We’re proud to announce that very soon, at long last, the famous Foothills Parkway will complete its extension through Townsend, TN to nearby Wears Valley, TN.
The Foothills Parkway is a famous roadway and long-held construction project with quite a history behind it. Its story has its roots with the Blue Ridge Parkway construction of the 1930s. In 1944, after years of lobbying for a similar parkway to connect recreational areas of the Tennessee Smokies, Congress authorized the construction of the 71 mile road that is designed to connect US-129 at Chilhowee Lake to I-40 along the Pigeon River. Suffice to say, the progress and history of the development has been a folk legend in its own right, but the project moves forward all the same and we’re pretty proud to see a new section of it being completed near us!
“The 16 mile stretch of the Foothills Parkway known as the “Missing Link” is set to be completed in 2018. […] The section will connect Walland and Wears Valley and give drivers scenic views that aren’t available by other routes. ‘It’s the only way you can see the highest mountains in the eastern United States in this way,’ said Sen. Lamar Alexander. ‘There will be millions of Americans who will come here to do that. They’ll enjoy east Tennessee, they’ll leave their money here and best of all we’ll have a chance to see it and enjoy it anytime we want to.'”
We’ll have more on this information as it becomes available. Stay tuned!
